Eight students of Rivers State origin undergoing Nautical Science Studies in Amnet University, Chennai, India, have graduated with first class honours and distinctions.
The eight were among the fourteen students from the state mobilised by the state government to undertake courses in Nautical Science in Amnet University, Chennai, India, under the Government Overseas Scholarship Programme.
The eight include Mrs Hope Mienyeibim Jumbo from Bonny Local Government, Mr. Lawrence Opuiyo Olunwa from Okrika, Iyalla Sonny Ikiroma from Akuku-Toru and Mr. Harry Bomate Doyar from Degema.
The rest are Okauwu Lasbry Loveday from Andoni, Ogu Iyke from Etche, Nwobisi Echendu James from Ikwerre and Saluka Adokunrun from Eleme.
Six of the students with outstanding results include Mr. Amadi Wisdom from Ikwerre, Biebele Bereiweriso from Okrika and Bobmanuel Tammy Omubo from Akuku-Trou.
The rest are Chidi Ifeanyi Sunday from Ikwerre, Iheanyi Wachuku also from Ikwerre and Mr. Ngobere Victor Bogey from Khana.
At a reception in honour of the students in Port Harcourt, the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike pledged the administration’s commitment in ensuring that Rivers people are properly trained to man the various sectors of the state’s economy.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Kenneth Kobani, also said that the government is repositioning the maritime sector through the rehabilitation of the State-owned fishing trawlers and ferry boats with a view to providing practical training and employment opportunities to the people.
He also said that the state is collaborating with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for the implementation of Cabotage Law with a view to creating employment opportunities for more seafarers in the state.
The governor charged them to be exemplary in their conduct wherever they find themselves.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Empowerment and Employment Generation, Mrs Comfort Iragunima, said that 30 youth were sponsored by the Government all Rivers indigence for the purpose of raising marine officers and engineers to fill the existing vacancies in the martime, oil and gas sectors of the economy, and also to re-position the state as a viable maritime state with great potential for expansion.
She thanked the government for granting post-graduate scholarships to two of the students, Harry Bomate Dieyer and Hope M. Jumbo to undertake their Masters and PhD programmes in the United Kingdom.
