The Rivers State Government has issued a seven day quit notice to residents of shanty buildings at Elechi Beach and some other shanties in Port Harcourt from Friday 15 July to Thursday 21 July, 2016.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, CHINYERE IGWE, declared that the ultimatum is to allow security agents cope with the high rate of criminality in the area.
The affected shanties are the ones at Urualla, Ojike, Okwuzu, Afikpo, Abba, Nanka, Emenike, Akokwa, Egede, Timber, Echue, Obidianso, Nwachukwu and shanties at the waterfronts of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology all in the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt.
The statement warned that any one found in those places after the expiration of the seven days will face the consequences.
Meanwhile, a consultant on real estate and property management in Port Harcourt EZE AKWARA-NDU has criticized the Rivers State government for the short notice given to residents of the waterfront.
Eze Akwara-Ndu in a chat with
correspondent EPHRAIM EMMANUEL called on the State Government to give adequate time to enable the people of the area to relocate.
The Consultant on Real Estate and Property Management EZE AKWARA-NDU advised the State Government to provide alternative accommodation for those who will be affected by the action.
Eze Akwara-Ndu however called on the State Government to partner with private investors in the housing sector.
