National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) have called off it's planned peaceful protest scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, September 27, 2017.
National President of the union, Comrade Patrick Ogbuehi, disclosed the recent development after a closed door meeting with officials of the Rivers State Government at the Government House.
"Today, the Rivers State Government on the instructions of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike appealed to us and have given us two weeks to address issues raised," the NURSS President said.
"I hereby call on all entire Rivers Students, to ceasefire towards the planned peaceful demonstration, because the State Government has indicated positive interest to ensure that our demands are addressed. I like to put in on record that we were not compelled, neither were we bought over.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon. Chukwuemeka Woke commend to leadership of the union for giving listening ear to the RSG and promised to convene the message to the governor.
He assured the union that government will meet their needs in two weeks time.
You will recall that the Rivers State government has earlier through the commissioner of information, Hon. Emma Okah labelled the said protest by the union as mastermind by the All Progressive Congress and the Nigerian Police to foster crisis in the state.
The All Progressive Congress in Rivers State has deny any involvement with the union and call on the state government to give attention to the needs of the students instead of politicizing everything in the state.
