Senator Uchendu Decries Mgbuoshimini Massacre, Pledges Legislative Support To End Killings In Rivers

Senator Andrew Uchendu, representing Rivers East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has decried the recent massacre of fifteen persons in Mgbuoshimini Community, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It will be recalled that by 3am on Monday, 9th October 2017, at Mgbuoshimini Community, fourteen persons were shot dead in their houses by unknown gunmen, while one other person was burnt to death, beyond recognition. This is coming after several persons, including a prominent Chief, were killed in a similar attack, in the past.

Senator Uchendu, in statement released to the press in Port Harcourt, commiserated with the families of the deceased and called on the Rivers State Government to synergise with security agencies to bring the perperatrators of the dastardly act to justice, and to also put a stop to random killings in all corners of the state.

"First, I deeply sympathise with the families of the victims of this demonic act of immeasurable proportion. I pray that God Almighty will grant them the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.

"This sad situation calls for sober reflection in Rivers State, as we must begin to ask ourselves hard questions: How did we get here? How and when can we get out of this horrendous pit of endless killings?

"I believe that the right answers will only emerge once we depoliticise security issues in our dear state, and thereby resolve to work together in stamping out criminality of this sort and all others, once and for all.

"I call upon the Rivers State Government to immediately meet with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to strategise on how to identify, apprehend and bring to justice, the criminals responsible for this massacre, and to also bring to an immediate end incessant killings in the state," he said.

Senator Uchendu, who is also the Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Procurement, assured Rivers people that efforts are being made at the highest legislative level, at ensuring that the Rivers State Government is given every necessary support that will assist her in fighting crime on all fronts.
