Save Rumuekpe Communities From Oil Curse ~ Sen Uchendu Begs Senate

The Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ohna Andrew Uchendu, OON, has asked the Senate to help save Rumuekpe Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, from oil curse.

In a petition presented on behalf of the oil-bearing community on the 30th of January 2018, Senator Uchendu stated that although Rumuekpe is endowed with eight active oil wells and one flow station currently being operated by four major oil giants, it is unfortunate that there is nothing on ground that reflects such amount of oil wealth even after so many years of oil exploration.

He said: For the past fifty years, fifteen thousand barrels of crude oil have been drilled daily from Rumuekpe, yet the community cannot boast of any good road, funtional hospital or any of her indigene working as a senior staff in either Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Nigerian Agip Oil Company, NAOC or Total Fina-Elf Nigeria Plc.

"What is happening to Rumuekpe people today is a clear case of the proverbial oil curse, and as the voice of the voiceless and oppressed, I cannot allow them continue to suffer miserably, even in the face of enormous natural resources," Senator Uchendu avowed.

Consequently, Senator Uchendu appealed to the Senate to come urgently to the aid of the suffering people of Rumuekpe community and help reverse the woeful trend which has besieged them for too long.
