The Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, the Most Distinguished Senator Magnus Ngei Abe today donated a brand new 100KVA generating set to NTA Port Harcourt as part of his effort to contribute to the organization.
Speaking at the commissioning of the generating set at the NTA premises in Port Harcourt, Abe thanked the General Manager Adebayo J. Bamidele for putting the interest of his organization above his own personal interest by presenting the issue of a generating set as one of the challenges militating against the smooth operation of NTA Port Harcourt when they met earlier. It was upon that disclosure that Senator Abe intervened by making the donation.
“ I want to thank you and other leaders of NTA here for putting the interest of NTA against your personal interest. At any point that you saw us, you could have discussed your own personal matter which everybody has, but you chose to talk about what would work for the benefit of the organization that you have been employed to serve and I think the country should acknowledge you and remember you for that”.
Speaking further as to why he made the donation, Senator Abe said, “everybody knows the importance of the Nigerian Television Authority to all Nigerians. It’s a means of communication, education, entertainment and enlightenment for all the people who tune in”.
Abe however used the opportunity to advise all media houses to create an open field where Nigerians can freely canvass their views and not shut out any group. “The Government has achieved a lot, and it’s important for Nigerians to know what the government has been able to achieve over these past three years. There are also those who do not agree with the government and they too should be given an opportunity to say what they think they could have done better”, the Senator said.
Speaking on behalf of the staff of NTA Port Harcourt, the General Manager described Senator Abe’s intervention as “ a watershed”, and thanked him for having the interest of the country at heart. “ We appreciate you for listening to our cries, and not only listening but promptly responding to our call by coming to our aide. To the glory of God, this is the generating set you gave us. It’s a mark of greatness that you listen to the cries of people around you”.
Abe had the honour of commissioning and turning on the generating set for the use of NTA Port Harcourt operations much to the admiration of the staff and management of the place.
Senator Abe has always made critical interventions outside his senatorial district for the betterment of the society. During his first tenure at the Senate, he donated an administrative block to his alma mater Rivers State University Of Science and Technology now Rivers State University. He also donated a building to the Anatomy Department in the University of Port Harcourt, all in Rivers East Senatorial district.
Putting the people first is the philosophy that underlines Abe’s representation, and it will not be out of place to call him a Rivers Senator owing to his pan-Rivers disposition.
