Abuan People Celebrates Festival


The people of Abua in Abua-Odual local government area of Rivers State celebrates their festival.

The historic festival which is popularly called "The Eyaal Abuan" is usual celebrated to make the beginning of every new year in accordance with the Calendar of Abuan.

The organizer of the festival, HRM King Richard Uku, said this cultural and religious activity have been in practice for over 500 years in the kingdom.

He described the festival as a land and individuals cleansing festival to make a better year ahead.

At the night before the Eyaal Abuan, burning arrows thrown into the dark sky as a means of cleansing the land.

Villagers jubilate in groups, singing, chanting with the belief that this arrows with the fire works will cast away evil and bad spirits.

The Eyaal Abuan which is celebrated by Abuans attracts natives from home and abroad irrespective of their belief to merry and renew acquaintance with friends and family.

It is belief that the Ake Abuan(God of Abua) the very benevolent God has taken away evil from Abua Land and will personally take care of all villages in Abua Kingdom.
