The Independent National Electoral Commission has asked Nigerians to ignore the results making the rounds on the social media in connection with the Ekiti State governorship election.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Professor AbdulGaniy Raji, said in a statement on Saturday night that the results were illegal.
Hours after the conclusion of voting in most polling units in Ekiti as well as the sorting of ballots and counting of votes in several of the units, many took to the social media to posts results reportedly from their units.
But INEC is unhappy with the development.
“Our attention has been drawn to the illegal release of the result of the 2018 governorship election in Ekiti State on the social media,” the Resident Electoral Commissioner wrote.
“Consequently, we wish to inform the general public that the Ekiti State governorship election is still ongoing.”
It added, “All the floating news in the social media in respect of the result of the election should be discountenanced by the public.”
The INEC boss assured the public that the commission would announce the election results at the appropriate time.
