The South South Chapter of the All Progress Congress (APC) Youth Coalition (APYC) has praised the leadership of the Party for zoning the position of the Secretary and National Youth Leader to the South South ahead of the National Convention slated for 26, March 2022.
In a press release signed by the Zonal Secretary of the APYC, Comr. Paul Ogara, the forum also drew the attention of the party to the sacrifices the region made in bringing APC to power. According to him, if the leaders from our region had not abandoned the PDP which was dominant in the region to join the coalition for the formation of APC, the party won't have won the elections in 2015. However, we have continue to suffer as the opposition continually use the narrative, “betrayal of our brother” Goodluck Jonathan against the party to continue to win election in the region. This is largely responsible for the APC inability to win a presidential election in the South-South since it's formation.
The South-West had 4 opposition governors before the formation of APC but was unable to come to power at the centre until the South-South led by His Excellency Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, His Excellency Timipre Sylva, His Excellency Ovie Omo-Agege amongst others joined the merger from the nPDP block. However, the South West was compensated with the positions of Vice President and Speaker amongst other juicy appointments which have continue to make the party strong in the South-West. Also the position of the National Youth Leader has been occupied by the three geopolitical zones of the North and for the period of 8yrs the South-West has also occupied the position of Deputy National Youth Leader till date. This no doubt has brought visible followership and popularity for the party among the energetic youth population in these regions.
Unlike other regions, the youths are the driving force in the politics of the South-South. And we believe the position of National Youth Leader will endear many youths of the region to join the APC and galvanize the teeming APC youth population in the region to break the opposition stronghold and enhance the electoral fortunes of the party in the coming general elections. It is worthy to state here that, how the party performs in the Presidential Election in the region will affect the Governorship and other elections that follows. The South-South needs all the encouragement and support to gain dominance over the PDP in the region. And by zoning the position of Youth Leader to the South-South, the APC has shown that the region is of the greatest importance to her and clearly sends a message to the youths that the APC is the party of the future.
The Youth Forum urged the Leaders of the South-South to support a credible candidate that will mobilize the party to victory in the region, someone that will ensure that APC youths get their fair share in inclusive governance and someone that will give our country a progressive representation of the Nigerian youth’s to the world. We are again grateful to the party and Mr President for the confidence repulse on the youths of our region.
